After attending a super fun Tumblr event last night, it occurred to me that I should probably update this thing more often. I get so caught up posting to The Week’s page that I forget I have my own.

So, aside from posting the random Instagram photo, I’ll now be using this as a place to put my work. I’ve been doing a lot of writing lately, for TheWeek.com and elsewhere. Look for it here, along with any social media projects I embark on.

I’ll probably post the occasional rant, and of course, I’ll share cool stories that I didn’t write. Like this one.

It’s true that these crimes have to be reported; we don’t want to be left in the dark. But it’s not true that they have to be pumped up into a big story or given wall-to-wall coverage on CNN. In Denver, it’s a huge story. But in the UK?

What bothers me most about the coverage of these things is the atmosphere of excitement that creeps in. The tone should be business-like, informational, the voice of someone resigned to the fact that crimes like this happen but determined to deny the killer any hint of glamour. An excess of sobriety to frustrate his craving for notoriety.

Everyone turns on the TV for news when a story is unfolding; everyone critiques the carriage of the story after the fact.

(Also, let’s be clear: When critics are talking about the “media” in this sense, they’re referring to the television media, not the print, radio or digital media)
